TE HEKE O TANGIHARURU​

Harehare Atarea was born at Kaiwhitiwhiti on the Kaingaroa block. The Crown wanted to buy the Heruiwi lands. Harehare was against land sales and preferred to lease land to the Crown. After many years in and out of court he lost heart. In the Karatia Court sitting he felt that it was all a waste of time as the land had been taken by devious means. On his death bed a delegation from Ngāti Hui sought his approval of Patara Mauparaoa to be named the next Ariki. His reply was “Paramount Chief of what? I showed the Pākehā our lands and they took the lot!” He died soon after.
