Tangiharuru, was not only a noted warrior but also an explorer who was eager to find a suitable environment in which to live. Tangiharuru lived at various places before conquering the Marangaranga. Through his explorations and conquest Tangiharuru exerted mana whenua over the Whirinaki Block, Kuhawaea to the north and the Kaingaroa on the western side of the Rangitaiki River. This established the ancestral boundaries of Ngati Manawa land taken from the Marangaranga. All marks on it are his and his descendants have occupied it to the present day. (OMB 1 1878:193). Tangiharuru is buried on Tawhiuau. Hui placed the bones of his father in a cave on Tawhiuau, known as Taranui.
