Hinengawari is the kaitiaki of the Otara Harakeke swamp also known as Te Repo o Hinengawari. The flax in the swamp is said to look like Hinengawari’s shiny dark hair. Hinengawari also predicts the weather and sometimes the brining of bad weather when the need arises.
